Animal Shelters, Rescue Groups and Animal Control Departments in Northern Michigan
The following is a list of shelters and rescue groups in Northern Michigan by county. The list contains groups within approximately 80 miles of Traverse City, Michigan and are groups that pick up strays and/or house them in shelters. Antrim County Animal Shelter
Description: Open intake government animal shelter. Adoption fee $45 with a $50 rebate once pet is spayed or neutered.
Hours: Monday thru Friday 10 am to 4 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday
Help From My Friends Pet Crisis Center
Description: Non-profit organization. We assist Antrim County Animal Control by taking in primarily owner relinquished pets due to a crisis in the family. These animals came from a loving home where they ran out of options and had to relinquish their pet to animal control. This is not a place for the public to bring in a pet, but it is a place for the public to visit and adopt.
Hours: Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 12 noon; closed Sunday thru Monday.
Benzie County Animal Control
Description: Government run animal control shelter.
Hours: Shelter hours are Monday thru Friday 10 am to 4 pm; Saturday 10 am to 1 pm (adoptions only)
Community Cats of Benzie County
Description: Non-profit organization. Assist compassionate caregivers who are feeding and watching over homeless cats by providing TNR and other support services including food, shelter, vaccines and additional vet care for injuries/illness, as well as educational resources. Also have adoptable cats.
Hours: Don’t have a location. Organization is run by volunteers. Please call or email for more information on how to volunteer, donate or adopt.
Charlevoix County Animal Control

Description: Government run animal control department. Shelters animals at the Charlevoix Co. Humane Society. All animal control problems should be directed to central dispatch at 9-1-1-. This includes emergencies and non-emergencies (bites, noise complaints, stray animals and other problems).
Charlevoix County Humane Society
Description: Non-profit no-kill animal shelter. Dedicated to the protection and care of all animals. Contracts with the county of Charlevoix to house stray, seized and surrendered pets.
Hours: Adoption Hours: Monday thru Friday noon to 6 pm; Saturday noon to 6 pm; Sunday closed. Office hours: Monday thru Friday 9 am to 6 pm; Saturday noon to 6 pm; Sunday closed.
Cheboygan County Humane Society
Description: Non-profit animal shelter. Responsible for implementing Cheboygan County’s animal control program and operating the county’s animal shelter. Dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of animals and finding homes for adoptable homeless animals. For all animal control complaints, please call 9-1-1 (stray dogs, cruelty complaints, etc.)

CARE of Clare County
Description: Act as savior for homeless animals that are without suitable caretakers and are in need of help; shelter the homeless; care for a find homes for unwanted, abandoned, neglected and abused; feed the hungry; provide medical services to the sick and more.

Clare County Animal Shelter
Description: Government run animal shelter.
Hours: Monday thru Friday 10 am to 4 pm.
AuSable Valley Animal Shelter
Description: Non-profit animal shelter. Provides shelter, care and adoption services for homeless animals and information about animal welfare to adults and children, especially the benefits of spaying and neutering.
Hours: Monday through Saturday 10 am to 3 pm; Sunday 10 am to noon
Crawford County Animal Control

Description: Government run animal control Department. Animals are sheltered at the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter.
Emmet County Animal Control
Description: Animal control dept. run by the Sheriff’s Department.

Emmet County Stray Center

Little Traverse Bay Humane Society
Description: Non-profit no-kill animal shelter. Dedicated to proving animals the tender, loving care and attention they need to become adoptable companions. Have a veterinary clinic and many programs.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY
Description: Non-profit animal rescue organization.
Hours: Adoption hours in Petsmart in Traverse City: Cats only Tuesday and Thursdays 5 pm to 7 pm; Cats only (dogs by appt) Saturdays noon to 4 pm; Cat only (dogs by appt) Sundays 1 to 4 pm
Cherryland Humane Society
Description: Non-profit animal shelter. Provides a safe harbor for the animals entrusted to them and they strive to find them responsible, loving and permanent homes while educating the public about humane values. Also provides housing for Grand Traverse Animal Control county dogs. If you have found or lost a dog, please call them.
Hours: Tuesdays 11 am to 5 pm; Wednesdays 11 am to 6 pm; Thursdays 11 am to 5 pm; Fridays 11 am to 5 pm; Saturdays 11 am to 4 pm; Sundays and Mondays closed.
Grand Traverse County Animal Control
Description: Government run animal control department. Sheltering services are contracted through Cherryland Humane Society. For dangerous situations involving animal neglect, abuse, endangerment or any life threatening situations, call 911.
Hours: Monday, 8 am to 5 pm; Tuesday thru Saturday 8 am to 6 pm. On call for emergencies through Central Dispatch.
H.A.N.D.D.S. to the Rescue

Description: Non-profit rescue group. Their mission is to help those who have no voice – the dogs in need or at risk of euthanasia in local animal controls and shelters. HANDDS – Helping Abused, Neglected, Disabled, Displaced Souls.
Hours: Adoptions are Saturdays from noon to 4 pm at Tractor Supply Company, 825 US Highway 31 South in Traverse City.
Horse North Inc
Description: Non-profit horse rescue organization. Dedicated to helping horses and horse owners in need. Rescue at-risk horses from abuse, abandonment and neglect and to provide healing and rehabilitation; to provide a second chance for these horses in loving forever homes; to educate and assist horse owners struggling to provide for their horses. Available to animal control agencies to respond to their need of assistance in neglect, abandonment and/or cruelty cases.

Description: Non-profit animal rescue organization. Dedicated to animal welfare with a shelter facility.

Hurlin’s Hospitality and Parrot Rescue
Description: Non-profit parrot rescue. Rescues and rehabilitates parrots in need. Work with and supports fellow rescuers and educates the public about the plight of the captive parrot.

UN-Cats Feline Rescue
Description: Cat rescue organization and sanctuary for cats with feline leukemia and who are FIV positive. Also deals with feral cats.

Description: Non-profit organization. Rescue and hospice for homeless senior dogs.

The Munchkins’ Mission
Description: Non-profit organization concentrating on TNR and finding homes for cats and kittens. They are dedicated to stopping the cycle of over-population by saving lives with spay and neuter.

Missaukee Humane Society
Description: Non-profit no-kill rescue organization. Adopting out cats and dogs.

Elk Country Animal Shelter
Description: Non-profit animal shelter working with county government. Advocates for and remains active in humane education and spay and neuter programs for the community.
Hours: Tuesdays thru Fridays 11 am to 4 pm; Saturdays 10 am to 3 pm; Sundays and Mondays closed.
Bellwether Harbor Animal Shelter
Description: Non-profiit organization. Helping animals and people make a connection through education, training and adoption.

Lake Haven Rescue
Description: Non-profit no-kill rescue organization for homeless, injured and orphaned animals (not owner surrenders)
Hours: Two adoption days each month – on the first and third Saturdays, noon to 3 pm. Pet Supplies Plus at 4920 Wilson Ave. SW, Granville, Michigan (across from Costco). Otsego County Animal Shelter
Description: Government run animal shelter dedicated to the humane treatment of the animals while in their care, control and custody.
Hours: Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 4 pm; Saturday 9 am to noon; Sunday closed.
Roscommon County Animal Shelter
Description: Government run county animal shelter. They take in animals surrendered by individuals when there is room – and they take in stray animals found in the county. The shelter makes every effort to find the owners of stray animals and encourages pet owners to keep their pets licensed and tagged. The shelter’s mission is to inspire compassion, strive to reunite lost animals with owners, spay or neuter (when funds are available), adopt and immunize all pets that come into the shelter.

Animal Advocates of Wexford County
Description: Non-profit organization. Mission is to start a cat rescue. Educates the public on the importance of spay and neutering domestic and feral cats and dogs. Helps community by providing referrals for education, veterinary and support services as need. Fosters cats for placement in homes.
