Library Reading Buddies
Ardis Missaukee District Library.
Brought to you by the library and Missaukee Humane Society Kids Club…Adults and children are invited to visit the library to be partnered with a Reading Buddy. When the reading is finished, the participants will receive a prize to take home.

11 am to 2 pm Monday through Saturday
Shelter Reading Buddies – starts June 1st 
Come Read with an Animal!
Adults and children are invited to visit the shelter and read to the animals. Please call the library 839-166 or Missaukee Humane Society 839-3800 with any questions.

Shelter Buddies Reading Program

Help your child gain confidence in their reading skills this summer by reading to a shelter cat or dog every Friday at the shelter! This program is for children grades K-5. Simply schedule a 20-minute reading slot by calling ahead of time and hang out with a shelter animal in our reading room (must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Bring your own book or choose one from our library. Plus – participate in the Shelter Buddies Summer Reading Challenge. Have an avid reader? Read the five LTBHS selected books during the summer and students who complete the challenge will receive a Challenge t-shirts, group pizza party/shelter tour! Don’t miss Northern Michigan Animal Rescue Network’s 8th annual Yappy Hour. Featuring a wine tasting, door prizes, wine glasses, decorating contest and scrumptious appetizers provided by Pier M-33. All attendees receive a FREE engraved wine glass courtesy of Coldwell Banker. It’s that time of the month again! Time for PUPS AND PALS!! And group fun run/walk to raise money for the Cherryland Humane Society! $5 donation is suggested! Hike with a Cherryland adoptable dog! Come meet and greet our adoptable dogs and join us for a hike around the nature area! Wagging Tails & Hiking Trails is a new event to get our dogs out of the shelter and into nature for some fun! This is a great way to exercise our dogs and get them out into the public. While out of the shelter the dogs will be more relaxed, be able to open up, and be dogs! Join Oryana and Dr. Lisa Melling, DVM CVH of Good Harbor Holistic Veterinary Care for an evening of fun and education as she teaches you how to share healthy plant-based meals with your dog. With more than a decade of experience in home prepared diets for pets, Dr. Lisa will discuss how we can help our dogs improve their health and help the environment all at the same time by feeding them fresh, homemade, wholesome meals instead of processed dog kibble. One of the most popular kids events with registration from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Entries are open to “Live” pets, and categories include Ugliest Mutt, Best Dressed Pet, Most Unusual Pet, Fat Cat, Pet & Owner Look Alike, and Best Dressed Ensemble. Event is open to kids 3 – 12 yrs old. Animals must be under control by the participant. No fee required.
