Update on Michigan Pet Legislation

From the HSUS – Michigan

Michigan Gas Chamber Ban: In the past six months, all four of the animal control shelters that had gas chambers (in Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and most recently, Branch County) have announced their plans to end their use and move to the more humane and economical method of euthanasia by injection. So there are currently NO operating carbon monoxide gas chambers operating in Michigan animal shelters. But this does not mean that our work is done! There is nothing stopping another shelter from deciding to use a gas chamber at any time. Please stay tuned for more information on continuing efforts to prohibit gas chamber use statewide.

Michigan Puppy Mill Legislation: HB 4898 to regulate the operation of large-scale dog breeding facilities, sponsored by Rep. Mike McCready with co-sponsors Reps. Kurt Heise, Harvey Santana, Christine Greig, Klint Kesto, Ken Yonker, Ed Canfield, John Kivela, Gary Glenn, Mike Callton, Al Psholka, and Earl Poleski, passed out of the House Appropriations Committee on October 21, 2015 and now awaits a favorable vote on the House floor before moving to the Senate.
