What’s more fun than a walk with your favorite dog – or two or three? What if there was a way that you could help donate money to your local animal shelter or rescue organization while you are on your walks? There is a a mobile app by Wooftrax called “Walk for a Dog” that does just that. Wooftrax has partnered with 6,000 shelters all over the United States for a combined total of more than 3 million walks.
Walk for a Dog is a mobile app for Android and iPhone. After downloading the app onto your smartphone, take the phone with you when you walk your dog/s and press the “Start Walking” button to keep track of your walk. When your walk is done, that walk is credited to your selected shelter or rescue group. The app will show you how many people are walking for that organization and will also keep track of how far you walk and other information. There are also buttons to keep track of your runs and biking. You can download the name and photos of the dog who will be walking with you and keep track of their walks as well. You will need to be outside for the app to work.
Jenny Soden, a Traverse City user of the app says, “I have been using this app for over a year now and love that it costs me absolutely nothing, yet helps so many animals in need. Hiking with my dogs daily is wonderful exercise for us both and in turn helps pets who are needing furever homes. I am active in volunteering for animal groups and this is one way we can all make a difference.”
Local animal shelters and rescue organization already signed up with this mobile app include: AC PAW, Cherryland Humane Society, AuSable Valley Animal Shelter, Antrim County Animal Shelter, Kalkaska Animal Shelter, Northwoods Animal Coalition, CARE of Wexford County, Animal Welfare League of Benzie County, Cheboygan County Humane Society, Au Ca Do Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of Michigan, Otsego County Animal Shelter and more.
The more people actively walking for a shelter or rescue group, the more money is donated to that organization. The number of walks counts too. Donations are funded by sponsorships, advertising and investors of WoofTrax and are sent out once or twice a year. In 2014, they sent out over $65,000 in donations to animal shelters and rescue organizations across the U.S. They have given out $55,000 already in 2015. The next round of donations will be happening at the end of this year.
WoofTrax started in 2013 by Doug Hexter, whose love for dogs and software development background led him to make the app. WoofTrax won the 2015 Hero Award for “Best Business Act” from the PeaceJam Foundation for their part in addressing homeless animals in the United States by helping people donate to animal shelters. The PeaceJam Foundation is an international organization whose mission is to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on their spirit, skills and wisdom.
