A Farmington Hills (Oakland County) dog breeding kennel was recently listed as one of the 101 worst kennels in the country, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Animal control officers found unsatisfactory conditions at the kennel twice in four inspections over the past year.
The Humane Society report, released early this month, names the Chien d’Or Kennel — a breeder and seller of American Kennel Club-registered Golden Retrievers that has been in operation since 1999 — as one that has failed “multiple” county inspections. The report states that photographs taken at past county animal control inspections show dogs with patches of missing fur, dogs confined to small, rusty cages, dirty conditions and overcrowding. “The kennel has failed many state inspections since 2008 and has been the subject of numerous buyer complaints,” it reads. From HSUS MICHIGAN – Featured in the report is Chien d’Or Kennel, a.k.a. Gabriels Ark Kennel (www.chiendorgoldens.com) in Farmington Hills. The AKC-linked kennel, which breeds AKC golden retrievers and sells puppies online and directly to the public, has failed multiple Oakland County inspections and has been the subject of numerous buyer complaints. Photographs taken at those inspections show dogs with patches of missing fur, dogs confined to small, rusty cages, dirty conditions and overcrowding. Pam Sordyl of Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan has gathered extensive documentation from public records and informants and stated, “Ms. Gabriel is a chronic offender with repeat violations to Regulation 129 governing dog kennels. The deplorable conditions of the kennels have directly impacted the dog’s health, possibly violating state animal cruelty laws, yet no charges have been filed.” You can read the full report at www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/pets/puppy_mills/101-puppy-mills-report-2014.pdf.
According to Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan, the formal zoning hearing for the Farmington Hills Golden Retriever Kennel was adjourned again on thursday, May 15th. The next hearing is scheduled for June 19th at 3 pm. Last August, the kennel was cited for having an illegal kennel in the basement. The kennel operator claims she was grandfathered.
The following photos and inspection reports on this kennel were provided by Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan. It shows the appalling conditions at the home and kennel of Mary Kathryn Gabriel. It shows the statement provided by a person who worked with Gabriel and is concerned about the dogs. It also shows the opinion of the deputies involved with the inspections that Gabriel’s kennel license should be revoked and her animals removed.
If you would like to contact Oakland County elected officials and ask them to act on removing Gabriel’s kennel license and seizing the dogs, here is the contact information:
