SB 354, “Grant’s Bill” to end the use of gas chambers in Michigan shelters, passed the Senate last fall by a vote of 37 to 0 and now awaits a hearing in the House Committee on Local Government. The House is on spring break until April 17, but when they return please call the committee’s chair, Rep. SB 285 and SB 286 to increase penalties for animal cruelty are awaiting final votes on the House floor before moving to the Governor’s desk. The bills amend the Michigan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to add definitions for “breeder” and “pet shop,” and increase penalties for cruelty involving domestic violence and companion animals and cases with large numbers of animals. When the House returns from spring break on April 17, please call your Representative to politely ask for a YES vote on SB 285 and SB 286 to strengthen animal cruelty penalties! The date for Humane Lobby Day has been changed to Tuesday, May 13, 2014. It will still be in Room 402/403 of the Capitol Building in Lansing. This full-day event begins with a lobbying workshop and an overview of animal-related bills in the Michigan legislature, followed by meetings with legislators and their staff.
