Michigan Legislation Update and Humane Lobby Day Information

SB 354, “Grant’s Bill” to end the use of gas chambers in Michigan shelters, passed the Senate last fall by a vote of 37 to 0 and now awaits a hearing in the House Committee on Local Government. The House is on spring break until April 17, but when they return please call the committee’s chair, Rep. Amanda Price, at (517) 373-0838 to politely request that she schedule a hearing for SB 354 as soon as possible. Learn more at http://michigandersforshelterpets.org/grants-bill/.

SB 285 and SB 286 to increase penalties for animal cruelty are awaiting final votes on the House floor before moving to the Governor’s desk. The bills amend the Michigan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to add definitions for “breeder” and “pet shop,” and increase penalties for cruelty involving domestic violence and companion animals and cases with large numbers of animals. When the House returns from spring break on April 17, please call your Representative to politely ask for a YES vote on SB 285 and SB 286 to strengthen animal cruelty penalties! Find your Representative at http://house.mi.gov/mhrpublic/.

The date for Humane Lobby Day has been changed to Tuesday, May 13, 2014. It will still be in Room 402/403 of the Capitol Building in Lansing. I am heartsick over all the stories in your feeds. I’m disgusted that Michigan is so backward in getting humane laws on the books. Lastly I’m ashamed at the stupid people leaving assinine comments. To own pets people should have to have ownership training, think pre-marriage style. No guarantees but at least everyone involved will know what they’re getting into. Everyone is in love with the ownership concept but not all are informed and educated on pet responsibilities. Are you running a news feed on fb? I’d share it with others. Thanks
